Unfortunately, some officers (hopefully the exception not the rule) are ignorant of the laws they are trained and obligated to uphold. The K9 routine is just a dick move/tactic... and the qualified immunity is CYA BS.
When good officers start turning in bad there would be hope to remove or retrain tyrants. Unfortunately, the good cop will lose that fight. They hire tattooed gang members and those bullied as kids.
When they break the law and false arrest American's...they lose qualified immunity.
Mandatory racial sensitivity training? B.S. He is assuming that what happened is because he's black. For gosh sake show your damn ID and then leave when all is done. The key word here is cooperate whether you agree or not. Had there been an egregious, harmful action, take it to criminal court asap. Hire an attorney asap. File a complaint asap. BUT cooperate, period. I believe the passenger acted with bitterness due to his assumption he was stopped because he's black. Also, he harbors anger and so resists. No one wants to be mistreated. No one. However, obey authority and if necessary, fight it out in court. Bad cops deserve discipline and punishment for sure. BUT cooperate when stopped, period. My 17-yr.-old son got up in the AM and walked his dog around the retention pond behind our home. No sooner did he come back in the house when two deputies, guns in hands, walked up from behind the house and knocked on the front door. They said there was a robbery at gunpoint at the Pizza Hut behind our home and that my son fit the description of the perpetrator (black as he's African American, Irish Italian, wearing jean shorts, white T-shirt). I explained that he had just woken up to walk the dog, but that he would go to Pizza Hut with them to be identified by Pizza Hut workers as I taught him to respect and obey authority (most especially law enforcement). Also, that by cooperating with the deputies it would help them rule out that it was not my son which was the case. This way, they could continue looking for the perpetrator. Cooperate. Don't let pride get in the way. Don't let hate, racism, bitterness, anger prevent the use of common sense. We have a judicial system that will punish bad cops. If not, keep fighting the system. Fight for your rights through the system. There is no excuse for crime, period. What happened in the car incident was not bad at all. There is so much crime, however. Law and order must rule for all Americans. We all must follow the law. Black folks who feel white cops are racist should apply to be cops in their own neighborhoods and take over protecting them. That would get the white cops out.
My only disagreement with what you wrote here was that one should certainly protest an abuse, but not resist. As an example, one would say "I do not consent to this search" ... but not get into a fist fight to avoid being searched.
He had every right to say what he did regarding passengers not required to show ID. After which he should have cooperated and then filed a complaint and/or hired an attorney if necessary. If there were more cooperation and people willing to testify in the high crime cities, folks would not be seeing so many cops in their neighborhoods.
The Cop MUST follow the law. We live in America...not Nazi Germany. We don't show our papers here. This stop went from a bent license plate to dog sniffing. Cops out of control.
Your son's situation is a whole different story. Did you ask for the description of the real criminal to see if it was close to your son's description?
Have never claimed that all cops do everything right. Yes, the cop must follow the law. It's too bad the lights on the back vehicle and tag caused notice. However, he has every right to file a complaint and even an attorney if he feels it is necessary. In his best interest he should cooperate which is the best thing for him and then fight what happened. OF COURSE the cops explained the description to me before we went to Pizza Hut. In my statement I said the perp was black as is my son, had on a white t-shirt and jean shorts as my son. If there were more cooperation and people willing to testify in the high crime cities, folks would not be seeing so many cops in their neighborhoods.
Your sons circumstance is a rare exception. To harass a passenger in a car for a traffic stop is brownshirt bullshit. Anyway you look at it it's unconstitutional behavior that is unacceptable and must be made an example of. These guys must be held to a higher standard...they swear an oath to uphold the constitution and it's laws!
Yes, it definitely required that the cops be made an example of. That comes after cooperating though. He had a right to speak up about not being required to show an ID. After that, he should have cooperated. I disagree with what the cops did. We must cooperate. Folks getting stopped by cops is not a rare exception and we need to cooperate. Again, crime is extremely high in cities where cooperation is resisted, where folks refuse to be witnesses and testify in order to make sure criminals face consequences. All of that is wrong and harms those neighborhoods. The children are who I'm concerned about. Yet, the resistance continues because of an attitude, assumptions, anger. All crimes are way up for the reasons I've mentioned. I want bad cops to be held accountable always. More than that, I want gang bangers, murderers, rapists, assaulters, thieves, arsonists, looters to be held to account, too. Period.
I've been stopped and didn't always agree. Have never claimed that all cops do everything right. Yes, the cop must follow the law. It's too bad the lights on the back vehicle and tag caused notice. Gestapo Tyrants? Lol. Not sure what else was supposed to happen here. The dude asserted his rights, but did not resist and did not get hurt or himself hurt anyone else. He lost on the side of the road but prevailed in court. That's pretty much how it ought to be in these kinds of confrontations.

How about this tyrant. Would you want to be stopped by him?
