Imagine thinking that they are pushing gun control because they think it "saves lives"
They don't care about saving lives and they know gun control won't make any difference. The real reason is to strip citizens of their ability to defend themselves and their family to make them more reliant on government and also ensure that citizens are disarmed so that they can really lower the boot of tyranny and oppression on our necks knowing the citizenry has no way to fight against tyrannical government.
In short, it's not about saving lives. It's about power and control.

Beyond that, take away guns and people will find another way to murder each other, such as knives (like in London).
Take away knives and they'll go back to the old caveman approach, ie blunt force trauma.
You know it's really incredible how many ways you can kill someone using household objects.
If guns were completely banned and you really wanted to murder someone, its not like its very hard to make blackpowder
