It's a catch 22 though, as great as his return to social media will be, I feel like if he waited a year we could thin the herd of fake news. So many outlets are basically on the verge of bankruptcy without the Trump bump, his silence means they have no Boogeyman to radicalize people against.
Normal rules of business don’t apply to media outlets. They are disposable (and endlessly replaceable) tools for other entities. They don’t exist to make profit but to sway public opinion, which helps keep their masters in power, which allows profits orders of magnitude greater to be made elsewhere. The herd will never become thinner, no matter how many outlets fail.
Even more to the point (bc this is what I do for a living): “Disposable Tools” is another term for “Subsidiary Loss Leaders.”
In other words, they can hide their losses in the ultimate Parent Company if privately owned.
I’ve never researched the specific media companies that are publicly owned. Most of them now I’m assuming. Even so, all kinds of financial fuckery can go on if you look at the consolidating statements at the very end + the details/notes.
