New York's subway system, specifically the stations are frankly an embarrassment to the world.
How does the supposed financial mecha of the US have a subway system that looks like it hasn't been maintained since the 1940s has tiles falling off the walls, is hot, dirty, lacks decent signage and working ticket machines?
Except for a few stations it looks like something out of a fallout game were it not crowded.
I know this is New York, so many have less choice, but it applies anywhere. If you want people to use public transportation then make it at very least safe, then if able clean, and then finally something to be proud of.
You are absolutely right. The stations are disgusting but we are used to it. When a station gets renovated it usually takes two years with the stop is shut down all that time and costs billions. I think most of us would rather suffer the stations as old and decrepit than have a needed stop shut down. And some of the old tile work is really quite beautiful so I look at that while I'm waiting.

Yea the tiling was cool and some seemed to reminesce of days gone by, shame they just let it fall apart and grow a patina of nastyness.
I suppose they will eventually just rip those out and replace them with advertising boards if they ever even get to it.
