The FDA was created by popular demand--so to speak--because of the preponderance of bullshit poison that was getting sold as food, snacks, and cure-alls by con-men back in the day. I've dealt with the FDA and like every federal agency they could use a 70% RIF across the board (operations would improve significantly), but they perform roles that the average citizen wouldn't just support, but demand once Timmy and Sally start dying again from eating metal shaving caramel snacks and floor polish cough syrup.
And yet in spite of their supposed food policing, today obesity (one of the biggest killers) is more extreme than ever before, and life expectancy has declined.
