No, they were very clear about the fact that they were regular people. That was kind of the whole point. They may have been exemplars of their time, but they were still greedy, sex-crazed sinners.

I almost always tell people to remember others in the context of the time, in which they lived. Especially the founders. However, seeing how far we’ve let this go, myself squarely included, I have to believe that they were simply better people, temporal restraints included.

Those dudes discovered a bountiful land which their rulers couldn’t take from them. They existed, in their eyes, to ensure that this new land wouldn’t be ruled over by dipshit tyrants.

They took great care, by law, to make sure their heirs couldn’t be taken over. They didn’t know that the same authoritarian evil that they had seen would come to take their heirs, using different tactics. How could they have seen it?
