I think the only hope for gun ownership now is that, since the stolen election, the right has proven beyond doubt that the Deep State really has nothing to fear from citizens being armed anyway. An armed citizenry lacking the will to use their guns to defend their rights amounts to much the same thing as an unarmed citizenry.
