That doesn't make any sense. The moderator had disagreements with other senior moderators and wanted to sabotage the forums by turning it into his own blog. Him, being petty, was more than willing to talk to the far left Washington Post to accomplish that objective.
Do you know how domain names work? Someone 'owns' a domain name (you can buy a .win for like $7), and then points the domain name to an IP address. Once he got butthurt from being a fatass he simply changed the ip address A record to point to his own server. No hacking required (nor would it be necessary).
As a mod, I can tell you that if any moderator account is "compromised" (e.g. FBI informant) there is not too much information they can obtain. At most they'd be able to see deleted posts and that's it.
