Look at any western nation that started restricting firearms and you'll find the governments just continue to push more and more restrictions until you have no more gun rights anymore.

In Canada, it is to the point now that saying you have firearms for the purposes of self-defense could reflect poorly on you because the weapons aren't "meant" for that. Not to mention, the rules in place to carry a weapon makes them impractical to use for self-defense.
