From the movie The Third Man,
“In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love. They had 500 years of democracy and peace and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock. - Orson Welles
Not a good quote when you consider how much the peaceful white Christian culture has totally reshaped the entire world.
Orson Welles' quote is the logical fallacy of false equivalence... cherry picking a time and a place just before the Industrial Revolution.
Welles was being flippant in a sense when he spoke this dialogue to Joseph Cotton and as a way to soften the blow of his revealing to Cotton, a childhood friend in the script that Welles was a rogue. Supposedly Welles ad libed the scene, one of the most notable of the movie.
Good movie! I thought about it recently when I heard some hospital was caught watering down the COVID vaccine.
Meh. ..not impressed.
huh i guess hard time bring out innovation and culture Idea.......
Totally forgetting that they gave us Swiss Miss Cocoa mix. That trumps all that other stuff.
