To be fair, a shot in center mass from a .223/5.56 will most likely be fatal due to its extremely high velocity. Unless you have some plates on, you're pretty fucked. It's not like getting hit with a 9mm FMJ Chicago street special.
5.56 is the is one of the least likely rifle rounds to do any significant damage via blunt force trauma if it's stopped by armor due to it's relatively low momentum. Rounds like the 308, 30-06, 450 Bushmaster, and 3"+ 12 gauge slugs will deliver much more blunt force trauma to an armored target than a 5.56 could.

Even if you're wearing a plate it's still possible for high energy rounds like 5.56 to break ribs under the plate. It's a fantastic amount of energy.
