He was a progressive who expanded the Federal Gov't's power, which many think led to the 16th and 17th Amendment Federal Gov't power grabs, but you do you.
I'll give him credit for some of what he did, but not a pass for his flaws.
He was a progressive Republican, some would define him as an Americanist or as its know today America 1st. Using the federal government to address issues the states can't bring themselves to address in the numbers needed is what it takes some times. But his fight against crony capitalism, fighting off the last European power still lurking in areas the U.S considered its region of influence, and his fight against corruption are the exact things we should want any President should do. How politicians after used his actions to advance their own agendas including expanding the fed power. Progress is a key component of America, today's progressive movement is a bastardized version of what people like him actually advocated and Teddy probably woukdve used the rough riders to put down
The pendulum is always swinging from small government to large. It is a sacrifice of Individual Liberty when the government gets bigger. The only time it is appropriate to make it bigger is during a real crisis.
The foes he was facing certainly were real dangers to the Republic, and I'd be ok with a stronger Nationalist approach to go on a wartime stance. But if you're going to fight a war, you need to win the war, and you need to make damns sure that the pendulum swings back towards small government, or you are part of the problem.
He failed to win, and he failed to keep the government from growing. 0-2
The pendulum only ever swings to more government and more cronyism.
Individual rights/tax rates/liberties rarely go the right way. The government tightens the noose, lessens it a little, tightens it more, loosens a little less, tightens a little more & so on.
In 1913 they said income tax wouldn’t go above 2%.
Look where we at now. Hell we even got us a “victory tax” after saving the Jews from the ovens in WWII. The same ovens that a group of wealthy aristocratic Jewish people helped fund.
Pendulum only swings toward tyranny.
It won’t swing back until there’s a real revolution. No one has the balls yet.
Once we all lose our jobs and are disarmed & starving half to death, then there might finally be one. For now, we’re too fat dumb & lazy and enjoying riding the last few millimeters of the coattails of greatness.

That's a strong argument, but it's incomplete.
