The ship has been shifted so the canal is now partially open for traffic but the number of ships on the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf sides are massive. (30% of the world's ocean trade passes through the Suez.

The alternative would be to sail around Africa but that would add at least 15 days to the trip. Most modern ships are built for a shorter journey and their fuel capacities are engineered for specific tolerances.
