If you look at our early Cold War relations, the deep state did everything it could to fan the flames, something that they continue to do to this day. The U-2 incident is textbook deep state, and changed our post-war relations with the USSR for decades. Col. Fletcher Prouty is a name worth researching if you don't know who he is.

The USA has a hell of lot more in common (or should) with Russia than we do China and even most of Europe who have become globalist and commies.
Strategically, we share a common border and control a huge amount of natural resources.
We also share a Judeo-Christian lineage and face many of the same challenges, including corruption.
There's no switching involved here, only a rational realization of common interests and shared paths.

I agree with you that China is a bigger threat. I don't think Russia is much of a threat because they are weak economically.
If Russia had the economic might of China, that would be a different story.
Incidentally, this highlights the fact that Putin is not a great leader. While China has flourished economically, Russia has been stagnant.
Globalists are the biggest threat - they powered the CCP into dominance and worked to weaken both Russia and the USA in as many ways as possible.
