The scarier part of this story is how gun shops have to give over firearm sale information to the feds. I thought that data was supposed to be safe from a potentially tyrannical govt.

The ATF has the "authority" to demand the records at any time if you are an FFL. And the FFL is required to keep records for a term of 20 years. If you ever close or go out of buisiness all records are "required" to be sent to the ATF.
