Only 17 days? I call bs. It's over 110km per day, every day, basically requiring nonstop walking with maximum 4 to 6 hours for rest SLEEP included, assuming the not too slow not too fast pace which could be maintained for hours straight.
Which actually plays well into what you say.
They couldn't achieve it all in such pristine condition, because such trip - keep in mind that it's with children, which are simply unable to do such things - would take at least a month. A month of sweat and dirt.

That's 17 days of non-stop walking at a reasonable pace. Doesn't account for hard to navigate terrain or sleep time.
Or scrounging for food, a place to sleep, hydrating in tropical conditions or fending off predators along the way, human ans animal alike.
