My money is on the reason he couldn't hear was because he had to have his hearing aids out so he could have earpieces in to try and prompt him when he inevitably got lost in his rambling.
There exists bluetooth enabled hearing aids that can receive outside audio. Might be funny to see if some one can sniff it on a bluetooth scanner thingy.
