I'm collecting unemployment after getting laid off from a job I hated- and I dont necessarily want to go back into that field but also I feel like I need a job and direction to do something with my life- but I have no idea what it should be.

I just find myself wasting my time by scrolling the Donald all day

If you wait too long, employers will notice a huge gap in your resume and they'll want to know why.

If you can find work then do so, just to earn money and learn some skills and open some doors.

I'm collecting 860 from unemployment after tax which is about 22$ an hour... would you take a job at a lower rate than that if it meant you could work? Or would you take the resume gap instead?

You sound political. You scroll here all day, you say. Do a search of "precinct leader your nearest city name" and rummage around. Go do it.

You are obviously happy with your nose in a screen thinking about things. Become familiar with all the right of center websites. They often list others at the side.

Also get out of the house and walk around. Let your feet go where they want, but no place bad. You know what I mean. Drive a little. Get a feel for it.

Plant some vegetables.

Stay fit and good looking. Don't get into soporifics.

that's a good point- I'm happy with my nose in a screen.. I find the internet distracting but these sites really stimulate me. the rest is good advice- I'm actually in the gym for 3 hours right now and hired a trainer a while back cause yeah, I wanna look good, but I still need that next step.

my dad has a garden! lol your advice literally mirrors odd parts of my life... the local politics jobs in particular I was looking into .. interesting

rather than collect unemployment and surf the donald, go deliver pizza for awhile. you'll meet some interesting people and maybe figure out what you wanna do.

not sure, never been on unemployment. also, I would sometimes bring in $200-$400 on a friday night when I delivered pizza. depends on how busy the store is and how many drivers there are I suppose, but still. I guess you gotta ask yourself if you're happy. are you growing? if not, are you fine with that? are you fine to know that the guy across the street is carrying you?

Yes.

A job is a sacrifice that you must make. You don't have to like it. In fact, most people don't.

Yes.

Unless you are currently using that money to start your own business.

care to elaborate on the why behind your answer?

Because when you return to the workforce, you'll be at the absolute bottom of the pyramid.

Legally while collecting unemployment you are required to be searching for another job.

Plus, you're just going to spend that money anyways and it sounds like you're just getting out of shape.

Collect unemployment now while you take some sort of online classes or trade school skills towards something you’d actually enjoy

Am actually learning to code lol (not just following Biden's stupid advice but thought it was a useful skill)... its just hard to say if coding is enjoyable yet so I'm feeling it out

Do you have even the slightest of a dream about what you would like to do? I’ve had all kinds of jobs. Driving a truck was fun for a while. But mind numbing. I built houses. You have to be able to think in 4D. Dream big. But have fun.

Can you get vocational training?

2
ClintonCovfefe [S] 2 points ago +3 / -1

I dont see why not? I am working on a house with my dad while collecting unemployment so I've been learning trade stuff (well, doing trades for a while actually) the past couple months. Have considered becoming an electrician though which would require schooling and labor hours

1
CuomoisaMassMurderer 1 point ago +1 / -0

Electrician is a great trade! Any apprentice programs?

ClintonCovfefe [S] 1 point ago +2 / -1

Technically the requirement for a journeyman license in mass is 2000 hours and XX amount of schooling so even if I can’t get into a school directly through a company I could start working anywhere to accrue the needed hours

1
CuomoisaMassMurderer 1 point ago +1 / -0

Shoot. MA used to be a great State. Some only require passing a test (to get your license. I'm not sure about journeyman)

If you can get hired, why not this field?

1
ClintonCovfefe [S] 1 point ago +2 / -1

Its an option but its a tough decision to take the cut in pay at the early levels

1
CuomoisaMassMurderer 1 point ago +1 / -0

Oof. 1 year of full time work is 2000 hours though. Max pay compared to say a plumber?

Welders get tons of OT. Welding underwater pays great. Just a couple options ...

1
ClintonCovfefe [S] 1 point ago +2 / -1

wait a second- I thought 2000 hours as fricken 4 years im an idiot! I could wrap this up in a year depending on how well I do on schooling- that's a lot more friendly in terms of a barrier to entry lol

Do some temp jobs and work at a bunch of places for a short time.

None of them may be the right kind of thing, but you get a broader perspective and you meet people.

Think about what you really love doing outside of scrolling patriotswin all day. If you get a job doing something you love, it really isn't a job...

0
ClintonCovfefe [S] 0 points ago +1 / -1

True but I dont know if that exists- I kinda like hard work and challenges and think that everything that you "like" will have that... like I love lifting weights but it sucks a lot but I like the reward of pushing through it.. I like lifting but I dont like lifting so its still work I guess

.Growing up is being responsible, being responsible is you need to take care of yourself (and family). If plan A is not working, you still have up to Z of the alphabet

Yo hear me out. Do landscaping on the side just to make money from your labor, then save everything and bust your ass to pursue your dreams. Look up dave ramsey on youtube and become a millionaire. You’ll thank me

Milk that piggy as long as you can.

That's terrible advice.

NOT working with the responsibilty to be on time and focused on assigned tasks is debilitating to your mental state.

I should know. And I see it hapoen to others all the time.

I see below you have been helping your dad, and doing gym work of a sort- this is good, gets you out of the house and active.

But instead of treating that as Other act as if they are bridges- bridges to getting back into the workforce officially. Because you need to feel useful and productive or you will lose internal motivation and self esteem.

The advice on using this time to explore other jobs, to do lots of things as a temp employee to gain broader exposure, to get vocational training in what interests you, thesr are all good advice.

Odds are very good the political work would be unpaid or at best seasonal, though- unless you buckle under to the GOP amd estb model... which is pretty much the opposite of what this site and T supporters value.

Sorry so late replying.

Yes you should, for numerous reasons:

People need to feel useful, productive, valued members of society. Even hermit like tech nerds have a deep need to feel of value to the greater community.

A sense of purpose and routine is incredibly important to maintain both mental and physical health.

A sense of self respect is slowly lost the longer you just sit around getting govt funds- somewhere between 2 and 6 months it goes from earned safety net to sucking govt gibs internally for nearly all people. This also erodes your sense of confidence and feelings of having marketable skills.

And basically random or exploring different jobs is a real eye opener as to what REALLY suits you or will be interesting or fullfilling- often they are very different than imagined and a happy match is not where expected.

Finally, you have a golden opportunity to pursue a new field or skillset with initially lower pay- you are at home and buffered from the true terror of having to survive on UE or take less pay. Take advantage! Chase a dream or desired set of skills, open future doors.
