I don't think we have ever seen this level of unaccountability. That is what is so frightening.
I mean we have rescinded habeas corpus (lincoln), put japanese americans in internment camps (FDR), violated supreme court mandates to opress the natives (andrew jackson), and put people in prison for having the wrong political beliefs (fdr/truman). FDR had almost unfettered power. It's pretty bad now but I think it was worse then specifically.
I only moved here (legally) in 1985 so perhaps I had a romanticized view of America.
I thought Lady Liberty, Justice is Blind, the balancing of the scale, all meant something but apparently not. They are all symbols of what justice should be, but not what actually is.
That's why the second amendment is so important to many americans. Because governments can never be fully trusted with power and want-to-be tyrants need the fear of god put into them from time to time.
