An employee at a major bank in Florida was so grateful we passed 15 an hour min. She makes roughly 19 an hour and her son works in retail. She said how pleased she was that they would earn more money. I stated "how we going to make more money"? She went on to explain her 20 years of service is worth a lot more than min wage. I responded the 15 an hour is like food stamps, designed to help the poorest among us. She than asked the manager when they raise the min wage 1.5 will she get more money. To which she was told no, just the annual raise if available. It was at that moment she understood. Telling me if she could work at the zoo for 15 an hour why would she work in a high stress office. To which I responded "you wouldn't". In hind sight I should have said those making 100k would prolly get raises.

My wages stagnated at the higher end, I'm not earning more money, I'm still just a wage salve. If I owned the business perhaps I'd be earning relatively more money, but the way the business sees it: I earn a lot already, why give me a raise?
You should use your 'decent' wage to fund your own escape.
It's hard.. but over the past 3 years, investing in myself using my Salary; I've bought tools, equipment, trailer and a Ram w/ cummins..
the jobs are coming in and I'm not even advertising yet... I work 'after' I finish work for the day. I often make more money 'after work' than I do for the whole day's salary. I work much harder for my salary than I do for the extra work in my spare time. The Salary is my life line but it can be taken away at any moment. (See Covid Lockdowns for instance)
This is the only way. I'm not saying you have to do the same as me; but freedom comes with working FOR yourself.
I hear you there. I bought a smaller scale CNC and have been learning the ropes. The learning curve is high, but the work is enjoyable, it won't be profitable up front, but once it is I have my option to jump ship from my salary.
I have a lot of loyalty to my current boss and it's going to be really tough to 'walk away' from the constant advancement in my career..
but to be honest I see the stressful life ahead of me if I stay in my current path.. and it's not appealing. In fact it's a motivator to hurry up and get self sufficient
