Just like the Post Office that’s dying because of overregulation, somebody in government wants SSI dead too.
The actual reason is that Social Security is being used as a bank account to make loans to fund these outrageous spending bills. They take out the big fund, leave an IOU with a promise to pay the payouts. The fund still technically exists on paper, but the money is being loaned out to the government. They can say that the money cannot be spent on anything besides SS, but they never said anything about what they can lend the money for.
The reason why some Republicans want to disband Social Security is because it would eliminate something like $5 Tril worth of debt overnight. It's like saying that since you owe so much to the bank, we should just shut down the bank.

It is technically a pyramid scheme. But pyramid schemes actually can work as long as there is a perpetuating pyramid to sustain it. But they overestimated the angle of the pyramid and they also lent the money to fund bad government debt. So it was mis-planned and mis-managed. Sounds like government.
