I hate to laugh, but I grew up on Chicago's south side without a dad. It's true. I don't use that as a crutch. I crawled out of the pit I was born into. Others in the same situation didn't have that fight in them to make it out. People say I should go back to help out, but with others trying to drag me down on my exit out, heckling me, and laughing at me... I'd rather not go back to get pulled under.
I wish people would accept personal responsibility and pull themselves up too. If not for them, at least for their families. Wouldn't you want to be able to get your family out of that situation?

It's gotten so bad that any attempt to better your situation through hard work and perseverance is derided as a rejection of black culture (as if laziness and crippling poverty should be embraced as some sort of cultural identity).
