Children often ask this question though in diverse environments. I’ve coached sports for little leagues (4-6 yo), and with their inquisitive minds, they ask about my skin. Some of the white kids assume the Indian kids and black kids on their teams are siblings and say so. It’s all pretty interesting to hear the chatter. If I have little Asian kids, I will have some non-Asian kids pulling their eyes to slants.

I know their parents, so for the most part, I don’t think anything is driven from any sort of home environment of true bigots.

My leagues are usually church-based so I default to a response rooted in God as opposed to some identity politics response. Not many children, at least in my leagues, have the disposition to sit through the full answer related to just geographical origination, which is ultimately God’s handiwork anyway.

I grew up in a black neighborhood. Until I was 4 or 5 we children called them "chocolate people." Don't recall being corrected or why we stopped. Chillun be chillun, I guess.
