Guess it's up to 57.5 cents per mile for 2020. For every mile you drive gigging, you can deduct 57.5 cents off the total you made on your taxes.
Ex: You made $32,000 in 2020 and drove 15,000 miles.
15,000 x .575 = $8,625, so $8,625 deduction.
$32,000 - $8,625 = $23,375 so you pay taxes on $23,375.
I think (could be wrong) it's only useful in that example if you drive a couple thousand more miles as the standard deduction is ~$12,000 in that tax bracket.
Best thing you can do is experiment with the deductions while doing your taxes to figure out how to pay the least amount. I use freetaxusa and it's pretty good.
Mileage isn't going to apply to the standard deduction. So even if you take the standard deduction you can report mileage assuming you had business income.

Self employed people pay self employment tax which includes social security and is higher I think it was 12.4% when I was doing it years ago. However it is offset by deductions. If you're an employee the employer matches your social security but most of the things a self employed person deducts also vanishes....so you pay income tax at the scheduled rate and an additional 7.5% social security tax (last time I had to do it) and the employer matches the social security tax.....bottom line...gov't collect more... and it increases the cost to the employer making it more expensive to hire people....(yes I know the percentages are different now)....

Making 20k as a self-employed person means you actually pocket around $12k since you have to pay the typical employee tax PLUS the employer tax, not to mention paying for health care, days off, etc. Lot of these MLM folks that dream to "be your own boss girl!" don't understand that they have to almost make double their typical W2 job to get an equivalent amount.

When I was doing gig bullshit it was barely worth it when you consider wear and tear and loss of all social hour times. I was killing it at one point but after everything was said and done maybe I was making $13.50 an hour.
I do gig work and average $30 an hour. Sometimes much more. I write off most of my taxes with the 54 cents/mile deduction. Car is paid off and repairs are cheap. It can work for certain people/locations.

Guess it's up to 57.5 cents per mile for 2020. For every mile you drive gigging, you can deduct 57.5 cents off the total you made on your taxes.
Ex: You made $32,000 in 2020 and drove 15,000 miles.
15,000 x .575 = $8,625, so $8,625 deduction.
$32,000 - $8,625 = $23,375 so you pay taxes on $23,375.
I think (could be wrong) it's only useful in that example if you drive a couple thousand more miles as the standard deduction is ~$12,000 in that tax bracket.
Best thing you can do is experiment with the deductions while doing your taxes to figure out how to pay the least amount. I use freetaxusa and it's pretty good.

I see so many driving brand new cars and I just can't imagine Uber is actually paying the full price of owning and maintaining that car. It always seemed like a short term strategy to simply shift your cost into later down the road. Like these kids got a loan for a brand new car and will never really pay it off but they are able to temporarily afford to drive for UBER which isn't paying much.

Self employed people pay self employment tax which includes social security and is higher I think it was 12.4% when I was doing it years ago. However it is offset by deductions. If you're an employee the employer matches your social security but most of the things a self employed person deducts also vanishes....so you pay income tax at the scheduled rate and an additional 7.5% social security tax (last time I had to do it) and the employer matches the social security tax.....bottom line...gov't collect more... and it increases the cost to the employer making it more expensive to hire people....(yes I know the percentages are different now)....
It's 15.3% now, but true self employed can recoup half that as a credit against any Federal taxes owed for the year.

Don't get me wrong, If it makes good pay, it's good, but more and more jobs becoming gig jobs, and most of them will not pay good amount.
There are fields where they will - just like you mentioned in IT - but ultimately will decrease the earning, which will lead to working crisis, imo.
Many fields have had enormous success as "gig" jobs. It's called freelancing, and artists, designers, interior designers, musicians, writers, stand up comics, actors, security, accountants, any number of industries have had freelancers, and many who do very well. Have for decades.
Freelancing differ from gig jobs in many ways - there is a reason in law they don't call freelancing gig jobs.
Most of gig jobs today are maintained by big companies such as Uber which are famous to under pay it's gig workers as well or even restrict some of it's drivers.
People should be able to decide to do quick work if they believe the pay is fair.
I work full time, and also do quick jobs online for supplemental income. I don’t need to do it, but it’s nice to have a little extra.
I don’t care about benefits or more money. If they “raise wages” the job will simply cease to exist. So now I will get zero supplemental income.
