solar panels area waste of money. So are windmills, they kill lots of birds, and the environmental impact from their production vastly outpaces any "good" they do. . If they were truly worried about the environment they would be all for hydroelectric and nuclear.

BigHandsome91 5 points ago +5 / -0

Hydro is the worst of them all. Incredibly damaging to migratory fish populations. But people only care about how much we fertilize the air (carbon) these days. Just convert all that stupid solar and wind land to forest and we can keep combusting away with the most efficient and energy dense sources we have found to date.

I hope they get solar to a point where it's not do harmful to manufacture.

So if this happens we should all run our engines in the driveway until they reverse course

If the reason is that electric and natural gas powered vehicles aren't subject to petroleum tax, then transponders on them only is the answer.

Otherwise, it is double taxation for petroleum powered vehicles.

Any idea what the per mile rate is expected to be?

Say average miles is 12k/yr

Say tax is $0.01/mile

$3T would take 25B car years to fund.

There’s about 285m cars registered in America.

It would take over 87years of every car paying an average of 1200$/yr to fund the project.

Average take home hourly is approximately $16.5, which means that after paying income tax the average American would need to work 72hrs every year to pay the average tax at 1c per mile.

Take home annual of approx 33k, means that average American buying power would be reduced by 3.6% by this tax alone.

Edit: big whoops, off by a factor of 10, don’t feel like going thru and editing everything.

Nice breakdown fren!

2
SHALL_NOT 2 points ago +2 / -0

Actually I think I made a pretty big error! 12000 miles at 1c per mile is only 120$/yr. Which is still $120+(0.33*annual income) too much.

3 trillion? more like 20

FLmanTampa64 3 points ago +3 / -0

This means that the government will need to track everyone's vehicle to assess the tax. But don't worry, it's for a good cause and the data will never be abused.

3
kornesque 3 points ago +3 / -0

The WH can't levy tax. Ironically, right now China can.

Smurfection 3 points ago +3 / -0

Anyone who has followed environmental nonsense since the 1980's, realize long ago, the entire environmental movement is about two things: 1) destroying any source of energy so America's economy tanks and 2) taxing the middle class as much as possible to destroy any remaining prosperity.

If the environmental movement was serious, they'd be demanding more nuclear power plants.

Hey delivery drivers... Fuck you. This butt sucking elf can fall off a tall building.

3
RussianLimbaugh 3 points ago +3 / -0

They'd have to have a tracker enabled on every type of vehicle. When Progressive Insurance introduced a tracker would "reward" good drivers, I couldn't scream HELL NO loud enough; and I've never been a customer of their company. This is absolutely a violation of the 4th Amendment at the very least.

4
SHALL_NOT 4 points ago +4 / -0

Or just when you renew your registration they add an odo check and the state forwards the tax to the feds.

3
RussianLimbaugh 3 points ago +3 / -0

If they did this, they’d have to make ODO unable to be messed around with. Older cars are especially easy to mess with the odometer. Otherwise, older cars are a mileage tax “loophole”... rich people love maintaining older cars.

That’s not a bad “these taxes only affected the poor & middle class!” argument they should be challenged to answer for.

2
SHALL_NOT 2 points ago +2 / -0

That’s perfect, from their perspective.

Either they crush the middle class and the poor, or they get to push even more regulation and require cars before x year to be retrofitted with a compliant odo in order to be registered. More regs, more power, old cars that don’t comply off the road.

2
boobsbr 2 points ago +2 / -0

They'll just define an average MPG, calculate the tax based on that, and apply it directly to fuel sale.

2
BigHandsome91 2 points ago +2 / -0

So people who drive 9 miles in 45 minutes because they live in a crowded shithole will pay less than someone who drives 20m in 25 mins? Nice.

2
findthewarmspot 2 points ago +2 / -0

WTF? That’s fucking unAmerican!! So now we can’t even drive to the ducking grocery store without getting taxed? OMG! I fucking hate these people!

That was always true...

2
wolfsettler 2 points ago +2 / -0

We DO get taxed by the mile. Every time you fill up your gas tank, you pay taxes on that. I swear to fucking god if this happens I'm going full sovereign citizen.

2
Ilikecheese 2 points ago +2 / -0

True, but 15 gallons in my truck doesn't get me as far as 3 gallons in my motorcycle .

Honestly, they may have to tax by the mile unless they completely overhaul how road construction and maintenance is funded. Right now its funded through vehicle registration and gas taxes. But the more electric and hybrid cars that are sold each year, the less road tax gets collected. They use less/no gas so there is more utilization of the roads with less funds collected.
