Go for it. Scifi fans are rather hungry for quality scifi, with the decline of both Star Trek and Star Wars, and any future Star Gate stuck in development hell.

Plenty of places to self publish your work as well, though I've been hearing Amazon's Audible is pretty contemptuous towards creators.
