The person setting up the photo shoot didn't know how to lay out a chess board, so they did it based on height of the pieces. The "model" was too ignorant to say anything, or just didn't notice or care. That's my guess.

Edit: there's also the possibility that the "model" and "set designer" are the same person. I actually do not know this instagram personality.
