I agree with this analysis, but for the sake of argument, overweight and especially obese people are especially at risk when it comes to most diseases and health problems. You don't really need to design something special for them.

I don't think it was a smart virus so match as smart application. Fauci has been studying respiratory ailments and bacterial pneumonia for at least 3 decades. He's done extensive work on community spread mycoplasmas, which are small bacteria that cause pneumonia and, if you want to chuckle at some kwinkydinks, all the same symptoms as kung flu including kidney failure, heart arrhythmia, etc.
You are right that it would appear like a mild cold to most victims, but this was a binary agent. The combination of viral load and bacterial load is the killer, along with the 84% chance of developing pneumonia by just falling, another leading cause of death.
