There's a long history of legitimate concerns and disagreements between Civic Nationalists and Ethnic Nationalists. Not just in the USA, but in Israel, UK, Aussieland and other nations as well. The media has taught people to scream NAZI!! whenever any kind of Nationalism is discussed, but Ethnic-Nationalism and Ethnic-Supremacy aren't the same thing. Highly selective immigration is good, especially because when new immigrants have to assimilate, they do better than when they can just disappear into minority enclaves and not assimilate for generations, or ever.
