Not based, always blames external elements and muh societuh for their own problems, based owns up to what was their fault or, if it wasn't, asks themselves what they can do better next time to overcome that obstacle. I think it would depend on the kid. Be part of their lives. Know them and determine what gets the best results from them. Most important is setting a good example. Much more nuance involved than just 'beat their ass' but that's too many words for a good meme.
