No doubt, Haitians definitely contributed to their country becoming a shithole but it's often forgotten that all the countries around them blockaded them and they were forced to pay reparations to France for centuries due the loss of their colony to the slavers.
A better comparison but unfortunately not a good one for this one cos it's not an island, is Liberia.
Liberia should have been one of the best run African black states in the world.
It had the backing of the US and the Western world and they had black intellectuals who were definitely a smart group of people help run the country.
