It probably wasn't even mutated. They just released the cold virus with 'scary videos' and 'leaked information' and watched the world scream like Chicken Little.
I'm willing to consider it might have been tweaked but that wasn't required at all for this scam to work - the tweaking was in the brainwashing psyop and the harm that caused.
Shockingly low effort in many ways - much the same as stealing an election - far too easy, inexplicably easy. So very disappointingly... easy.

The inability to smell went from being rare to being abnormally common, so this would suggest that something new is out there.
