Every time I turn on Top-40 radio I hear sheet music...sheeeeeet music

The dumb fucks think autotune and a drum machine are all that is needed for musical talent.

Sheet music is undeniably European. Any POC that doesn't want to learn it doesn't have to, especially at the University level. Likewise with seeing quality orchestras being conducted.

If anybody can place Chuck Mangione, when he went to music school and asked about jazz composition, he was told to "get a pencil." Apparently he did. Of course there is benefit to music education teaching jazz, and for decades many Universities have excelled at that.

The bebop era of the 1950's was dominated by black musicians as the big band era waned. These people did things no one was able to before, and (relatively) few have been able to since. They all developed their skill by reading and practicing sheet music, the same studies everyone else did. The ones I know about excelled at this, they did not take some other route.

To add more styles to music education doesn't require scrapping sheet music; in fact that defies the concept of "diversity."
