Here are some options: Remove the money from 401k. Huge tax liability. Invest in riskier positions. Risk losing a lot of money. Play it safe and invest in less riskier positions. Allow inflation to consume that money. Rollover the 401k into an IRA or Roth IRA. This would allow you buy precious metals instead of stocks. Be careful with paper metals though.
