You'd stop about 20% of mass shootings that way. 80% of all mass shootings are carried out by a certain urban group of people if you use the Mother Jones definition of mass-shooting. That definition is a single attack in a public place with four or more dead so really, that's a poor definition. It's a better definition for mass-murder involving a firearm because in these aforementioned urban areas, that group of people is constantly shooting large groups of people in public areas where people are merely injured. In my relatively small hometown every Monday the paper is filled with stories about the shootings that took place over the weekend, 2 people dead here, 3 dead 2 injured there, 2 guys walking into separate hospitals with gunshot wounds on the same night who conveniently "don't know shit". If you had a magic lamp with a genie and could magically wish that that group of people no longer murdered each other shootings would drop off instantly, yet these shootings may as well not even be happening according to the media. If it's ever brought up in the news it's local news talking about peace walks, prayer vigils and old folks on camera talking about how violent the young people are. I like the analogy that floats around about immigration because I feel it applies to gun violence as well. If your bathtub is overflowing you don't run and grab a bucket, you turn off the water. You could ban guns tomorrow and the only thing that will happen is law abiding people would no longer have them, and considering that it's illegal for the vast majority of shooting perpetrators to have guns as it is, they're not going to listen and we'll all pay the price.
I think where it came from is Steven Colbert had some monologue were he ignorantly said he wanted it to be like voting and rattled off stuff like he wanted them to to be 21 years old, that isn't true for voting. So i think this idiot parroted that without any clue how much more is required to get a gun. Like not being a felon. That's true for voting in most places, but they don't do a background check for voter registration.
