The COVID tracking project was a propaganda operation run by leftists. Its sole purpose was to prepare "official" numbers because the accurate numbers released by state and federal governments weren't bad enough to justify the fear-porn they were peddling.
Now that Democrats run the government again, the official government numbers already have the propaganda baked in so there's no need for a separate propaganda number factory.
MSM news outlets were sourcing it for a month plus in their COVID reports until people started asking questions about the validity of the site, who was running it and where their numbers were coming from.
A programmer named Andrey Alimetov created it back in 2004 as a teenager. It was an internet curio for years and was later sold to a company named Dadax LLC.
Worldometer is totally anonymous, It's rife with missing sources, mislabeled metrics and inconsistent criteria for fatality rates.
The site was even hacked last year and the case numbers were completely jacked up. Yet multiple governments used them as a source for reporting numbers and cases in the beginning of last year.
Every day, no matter the leftist talking point in play--be it regarding immigration, travel restrictions, small-business shut-downs, or mask-wearing, it all starts with Muh 500,000, and critical thinking is dormant enough that nobody questions--even though it's been made explicit countless times--the manner in which hospitals admitted that other causes of death more or less ceased and everything was getting written as a COVID death because of funding incentives (among other reasons).
To me, Muh 500,000 is on the same level as Very Fine People; it renders everything said after it moot.

Plus flu season is over. Of course the numbers are rapidly decreasing, it is seasonal.
