Washington was a brilliant strategist, leader, and republican, who voluntarily relinquished his power which he had won through battle. There is not a single political leader in modern American politics worthy of washing his breaches.

George Washington was a big admirer of Cincinnatus, who was appointed dictator of Rome by the senate during a time of emergency, and then stepped down voluntarily when the crisis was over.

You should check out the book 1776 by David McCallough. McCallough is one of the most highly-respected Revolutionary War historians there is. The book retells how the first few months after the signing of the Declaration of Independence was one disaster after another for the newly-formed Colonial Army, and how utterly hopeless things looked for the new nation. It's a miracle that the Americans managed to survive those first few disasterous months.
