'The system is broken,' San Diego parent tells Fox News
Teachers from San Diego Unified School District are teaching migrant children in-person before their own students get to experience in-person learning, Fox News has learned.
SDUSD students are currently learning in an online-only format and are expected to move into a hybrid model on April 12, where they will be learning in a combination of in-person and online formats, according to the school district's website.

"We have 130,000 kids who haven't been allowed in a classroom for over a year in the San Diego United School District. It's great that there's in-person learning for those unaccompanied minors from Central America, but I wish every child in San Diego Country was allowed the same opportunity for in-person teaching," San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond told Fox News.
"The system is broken when San Diego teachers are teaching migrant children in person, but the 100k students of taxpaying families at San Diego Unified School District are stuck learning in Zoom school," Emily Diaz, an SDUSD parent, told Fox News in an email.

"We agree that every child deserves an in-person education, but why are taxpaying students put last? If this is a humanitarian issue then who is rescuing San Diego Unified students, because our leaders have failed them," Diaz. added.
SDUSD spokeswoman confirmed to Fox News that district has shared the information about the opportunity for teachers to volunteer teaching migrant children in-person during their spring break this week, but said she doesn't know if teachers are getting paid, saying that it's up to the county.
The spokesperson added that she is not aware of any plans for the district to reimburse teachers for their expenses.

"The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) is providing the educational program for the unaccompanied migrant children who will be staying at the San Diego Convention Center through July. "The educational program will include English language development and social-emotional learning opportunities. The teachers who are participating in the program are doing so voluntarily, and the program is following a COVID-19 screening protocol based on guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."
"We are begging Newsom and the U.S. Department of Education, where our superintendent is going - rescue us! This is an SOS. They must mandate 5 days of in person learning for all students," Diaz, the SDUSD parent, told Fox News.
"Fourteen percent of our district are students with disabilities and 23% are English Language Learners. San Diego Unified took in millions of dollars in relief funding to bring them back at the beginning of the school year but only 6000 are in-person today and we have no idea how that money was used," she added.
"What is happening right now is immoral."

He just came home telling me how there were white slaves brought in with the black ones, primarily of Irish decent and was learning about how the original colonies were filled with patriots that had to fight off a tyrannical government so they could live freely. I actually enjoyed reading a lot when I was young. By the end of the first year in high school I learned that so long as I did my class assignments in the textbooks and my homework, no one cared about what I did so long as it was quiet and at my desk. So I would do all the assignments for the week on Monday and the rest of the week I could be free to just read other books. It's amazing how much information is exempted from the standard education of knowing what happened through human history. They quit teaching about the ice age and stopped museum visits by middle school or 6th grade.

The amount of free and cheap resources available through the internet, libraries, and some community centers is amazing but elective activities can be expensive. Most people are already paying for elective activities, they just aren't paying for school.

With that choice, your child will spend more of their day with other people that you know little about, during their most formative years, rather than with family and friends.

It's possible to get teachers fired with enough backlash. You have to escalate for each situation individually. Ideally the response is quick and vicious enough to make them fire her and back off. I'm not saying it works everywhere but it definitely has happened. Recently too.

In one of my linguistics classes that was on education, there were some studies showing that putting ESL kids with regular kids resulted in remedial ESL kids and below average regular kids because the teachers ignored the regular kids.
Education used to teach to meet the top-level children, which meant they were challenged like they needed to be, the middle was lifted up because they felt a sense of solidarity with peers who were genuinely enjoying material, and the bottom received the help they needed from interventionists. When I was in graduate school, there was already a lot of controversy surrounding this idea and teaching to the middle was encouraged instead- obviously the middle kids did well but still just average, the top kids were bored out of their minds, and the bottom still needed intervention. When I left teaching 3 yrs ago, the pressure came to teach to the bottom because there were soooo many kids with bullshit “unspecified learning disorder” IEPs that the district didn’t have the money or space to hire enough interventions; classroom teachers have essentially before uncertified special Ed teachers.
I saw a situation where a kid who basically couldn't write was in a precalculus class, and the IEP guy was trying to tell the teacher to let him take tests orally.

It’s the dirty secret of education (that I’m ready to sing from the rooftops) that IEPs are given to the worst students because you aren’t allowed to fail a kid who has one so the districts stats stay up while the teacher is coerced into just making up a grade for a kid who showed up to 2 classes all semester. I ultimately left teaching for this exact reason.
