I live in Deep South. We have to carry here. Those who don’t are protected by the sentiment that you may be carrying. Color doesn’t matter. Respect is key.
One evening, our kid’s friend came to the door unexpected, they didn’t tell us he was coming. I peeked thru window, saw 6’3” 200lb black man, grabbed a gun and the little one, told the hubs, got in the bedroom, and locked the door. Hubs got a gun, went to the door, and instantly knew who he was dealing with and invited him right on in. But oh my goodness did they give us hell. He laughed about every racist trope you could make. (It was funny). But our kid was a little more serious, I think of embarrassment.
Turns out, what they didn’t know..... was a family member had JUST been assigned a death penalty case for a man who had escaped from custody by killing a deputy during transport, and he was still on the run. And everyone knows who this family member is- was all over the news and papers, and we were immediate family.
Later that same night, this same escaped convict broke into a couples home, terrorizing and torturing them for hours until they finally got the upper hand and shot his ass dead. (Good feels)
So the next day I sent all the info to the kid, who was in school at the time, and they were so so so sorry for saying we acted racist. They apologized so much, saying they just didn’t know..... they had no idea what had been going on.
Well kid, of course you didn’t. That what we protect you from. But now you and your friend know that we are not, in fact, racist.
But we will react according to what is going on around us in the world, no matter what color anyone is.
Thanks for sharing, that's a great story! And yeah, not racist at all to be weary of intimidating people you don't know, ESPECIALLY considering the uncommon circumstances your family was in at that moment.
It's soo good to be strapped and trained. The world is dangerous, and it's the best thing any one of us can do.
But yeah, it's not like you were afraid of your kids friend because he was black. Obviously the circumstances you were in, but also when a large, strong looking person comes to your door that you don't know, it can frighten you.
I think it's more common to feel that way about black people mainly because most whites have less black people directly in their lives, so to have someone you have no idea the identity of is at your front door, it can startle you.
Again, the situation your family was in... I'd be frightened as hell to! I would've kept my piece on me at all times.
I'm glad to hear the man was killed. Saved millions of taxpayer dollars from running a death row trial.
And that's justice. I hope the people he tortured all made it out alive, and without and permanent damage!
By the way, if you don't mind me asking, where in the South do you live?
I'm in NY and I can't stand it here. I want to move in 5 or less years, and I've been curious about all sorts of areas to visit and get a feel for.
So far I'm looking at Florida, Texas, and Oklahoma. But I'm open to any deeply conservative areas.
Preferably low crime, nice area, a mix of city, town, and broken down land, as I'd like to own a few acres, but also not be hours away from a nice city that has lots to do.
Please understand I don’t want to say. Thinking about it, I’ve already given enough info to say exactly where I am and who the families are, if someone did enough sleuthing. We don’t live there anymore, but still... that part of the family does.
I believe the family got the crime stoppers reward, after enough people raised hell about it bc they were going to keep it or return it. (Don’t remember which) Not sure what happened after that, or if they ever got money from the city. They may have, idk.
I do not believe they were sexually traumatized or anything like that. From what I remember, it was a long struggle though, the wife had been contained one place, the husband another. The criminal went back to the wife who was maybe in the bathroom/tub. The husband broke free and made it into the bathroom and if I’m not mistaken, killed the intruder in the bathtub itself. (Guess the wife got out or out of the way.) This was a nice area of old southern renovated homes.... so not poor people.
I bet they are still scarred to this day, have even more guns, and a state of the art security system!
I live in upstate NY in the only liberal country up here, abd my local department actually seems to like when we own firearms.
I've talked with many, they've noticed I'm carrying, and make comments like "good, everyone should be carrying in this city".
