Senators used to be appointed by State legislatures up until the 17th Amendment was passed. I actually like that idea better than direct election, because then your state government becomes far more important politically. A change in State government could change the dynamic of national politics with the appointment of Senators from the new party in power. The 17A took state government out of the equation entirely, and now most people don’t pay much attention to it.

The initial breakdown of government was the House of Representatives represented the people (proportional representation), the Senate represented the states (two per state so all are equal), and the President was the chief executive who signed off on legislation once both sides were in agreement.

It would also make Senators far more accountable, since they could be replaced at any time if public outcry in their states becomes too great, like good’ol Mittens in Utah. He’d be gone already.
