It worked! Yay! Why don't people use it more Were you ever on Free Republic? The ping lists were an important driver of serious discussions -- different mechanics (the reply form had an address bar that defaulted to the name of the user whose post or comment you were directly replying to, but you could add as many user names as you wanted (if there was a limit, I never saw any evidence of it) and everybody named would get a notification. Obviously you can get the same effect by putting a string of u/____ formats at the beginning or end of a comment (I used to do that on Reddit, and will start doing it here). OP's should use this too -- it may need to be put in a comment, and would definitely need to be done that way for link-only posts, but it would help a lot with getting meaningful discussions going.
I think a big part of the reason this function isn't getting used much here and on Reddit is because nowadays most people are reading/posting/commenting from mobile phones, and it's a lot harder to maintain and access ping lists when you're not on a real computer.
I was not, but I do think it’s helpful across comments and conversations. I’m also on mobile, bc someone is always on computer. We are super tech family, but still have just one computer. Spouse is IT, but I rarely get on on except to do printouts or something for the kids school. If he’s not on it, kid is, and anyone can be kicked off at any time if he has to work. Not worth the aggravation.
Seriously, you should pick up a couple of cheap laptops. Mobile "phones" are seriously toxic. They inherently distract people, and make serious discussion and associated research difficult to impossible. The level of discussion on internet forums has plummeted as "phones" have come to dominate. People don't even realize how much their intellects are being stifled by these things. The rise of the mindless "woke" and "cancel" culture and "trans" insanity has been greatly boosted by these infernal "phones".
I've found this eBay seller to be very reliable http://www.ebaystores.com/Aventis-Systems They mainly resell used computers they buy in bulk from companies that are upgrading what they provide to employees. They also have a bricks-and-morter location in the US, and are genuinely reachable and responsive. Over the years, I've bought 3 laptops from them. Pretty sure they're still willing to customize a bit from what's listed.
Thanks for the link. I will look at it. I have notified I miss a whole heck of a lot being on a mobile. But I also can’t sit still. I move from place to place to place. I am thinking one of those laptops might work for me. We do have other laptops, they are just bug and heavy. And other tablets, but I’m not familiar with them. I just started getting online and into forums in 2020. Before then, it was just 2016 and comment sections. So I am a total newbie
