This New York Times piece about Matt Gaetz being investigated for Sex Trafficking a minor is unbelievable. The NYT ran a piece, citing "sources" (anonymous and not attributed to any official capacity, so you know they're false and lying) that Gaetz traveled across state lines with a minor and had sex with her. Prima facie, there's a lot wrong with the story - first of all, the charges they say he's being investigated for don't fit the alleged crime and according to a CBS Legal Analyst, the allegations themselves contained in the NYT piece, while salacious, are technically not crimes. Now, Gaetz has come out and said that this is part of an elaborate extortion scam against himself and his family. He says that 2 weeks ago, his father was contacted and a demand of $25m was made to "suppress" these stories and this person said that their "contacts" could even get Matt Gaetz a pardon from the Biden Administration. Gaetz originally said that the person is a former DoJ employee. Now he's named names - David McGee, is the alleged extortionist. He's a former DoJ lawyer and now works for a legal firm tied to the DNC. Not only that, Gaetz says that the FBI and DoJ wiretapped his father to attend a meeting with McGee at this law office and they collected evidence against him proving these allegations were, in essence, false and part of an extortion scam. Tomorrow, there was meant to be a $4.5m payment made, supervised by the FBI and DoJ, to this man McGee, allegedly through his law firm. It would appear, if Gaetz' side of the story holds up, that someone in the FBI or DoJ who was working with McGee got wind of the counter investigation and decided to leak the story to the NYT knowing that they would run it without proper fact-checking and they'd still be able to smear Gaetz. Gaezt is calling on the DoJ and FBI to release the tapes recorded on the wires to the public, so you know Gaetz isn't bluffing here. If Gaetz' story is true and this was an elaborate extortion scam concocted by DoJ staff with a former staffer whose law firm has ties to the DNC, then really, the NYT ethically has no choice but to burn their sources and make the names of the three people who they say they spoke to public. If not, then basically you've got to hope that Gaetz sues the NYT for slander to the tune of hundreds of millions and that a judge sides with him. It needs to hurt them so badly financially that their very existence is called into question. It's not acceptable for some of the largest media outlets in the world to be used as hit rags on political opponents by members of the government agencies that are essentially meant to be apolitical. If you're an American, you pretty much have to think that if this is true, the DoJ needs to be burned to the ground. Their partisan and illegal activities against American citizens over the last five years has been nothing short of banana republic levels. What a crazy story.

Gaetz is saying someone (former DOJ official) is/was threatening to smear him with false allegations if not paid $25M; Gaetz is working with fbi to catch them but there was a "leak" (smear) and that recent reports about him are inaccurate and an attempt to thwart the investigation.
