If you only have to post 10% of it, then why bother even setting it that high to begin with? Just say "your bond is $5,300". Or is there something I'm misunderstanding about the term "bond" in this case?
I'm not an expert enough to explain it in detail and it varies from place to place. My understanding is that the entire bail amount ($53k in this case) is like basically taking out a loan on your court appearance. The terms of defaulting on that loan by not appearing vary but basically the money goes to getting your ass back in court by paying a bondmen/bounty hunter as well as fines associated with skipping your appearance. You have to put a certain % down in cash usually to pay that initial potential bounty. Also, if you actually show up you get most of your money back as I understand it minus processing fees I think.
It sounds pretty convoluted. Hell, a 53k bond seems excessive to me when I doubt these guys together could scrounge up 500 on their own. So what do I know.
