We don't have enough military to go around for any sort of effective police state (don't just look at raw numbers before rebuttal - look at tooth-to-tail ratio).
Now local constabularies can get involved as the backbone and enforcement mechanism, but there's a problem with that: Local cops know they don't live in armed bases. Much like the sympathizer French cops during WWII's Nazi occupation of France, they and their families can experience unfortunate accidents pretty fast and rather frequently if they do anything more than some token showing.
Imagine joining the military thinking it is so serve the country and fight for freedom
The U.S. Military will be marching through your neighborhood rounding up dissenters and killing resistance very soon.
They will more likely set up chokepoints on highways. Its smarter and more defensible.
Not to mention actually doable.
