They will more likely set up chokepoints on highways. Its smarter and more defensible.

Not to mention actually doable.

We don't have enough military to go around for any sort of effective police state (don't just look at raw numbers before rebuttal - look at tooth-to-tail ratio).

Now local constabularies can get involved as the backbone and enforcement mechanism, but there's a problem with that: Local cops know they don't live in armed bases. Much like the sympathizer French cops during WWII's Nazi occupation of France, they and their families can experience unfortunate accidents pretty fast and rather frequently if they do anything more than some token showing.

That doesn't follow though because it's been made readily apparent that Americans are toothless as it gets.

Most of the French were the same - cowering in their homes and jobs, quietly hoping nobody bothered them until it all went away. But, that small minority of resistance fighters? They weren't many, but they punched well above their weight, and they ultimately made D-Day possible (as well as made it a lot smoother than it could have gone.)

(funny part - after the war, all the sudden every Tom, Dick, and Francois was bragging about how he was a resistance fighter during the war. Funny how that worked...)
