We don't have enough military to go around for any sort of effective police state (don't just look at raw numbers before rebuttal - look at tooth-to-tail ratio).
Now local constabularies can get involved as the backbone and enforcement mechanism, but there's a problem with that: Local cops know they don't live in armed bases. Much like the sympathizer French cops during WWII's Nazi occupation of France, they and their families can experience unfortunate accidents pretty fast and rather frequently if they do anything more than some token showing.
They will more likely set up chokepoints on highways. Its smarter and more defensible.
Not to mention actually doable.

Regarding numbers, they have a plan for that. The 800,000 expected illegal immigrants will be offered unqualified citizenship for military service.

FYI it's not 800k immigrants it's 800k families, which at minimum of 2 adults and 1 kid that'd be 2.4M, say half have 2 kids that makes 2.8M.
