Haven't watched TV in a while, watching a movie on TBS with the family since they're visiting...
And I guess the f bomb is now allowed among with every other swear word and the middle finger.
I must have been out of the loop for a while!
(I do swear, just didn't think it was allowed on TV)
It was largely about the fear of pushback from Western Christian culture. But the programming was always made to shift the overton window.
Cable (non over-the-air) channels have pretty much always been able to do swear words, and far more. And the OTA networks have different rules after 10pn (such as partial nudity as far back as 'Hill Street Blues'.)
Now its just bumsrush for dehumanization, licenstousness, race-tensions, homonormative displays, and satanism.
I think that rule is only for broadcast stations. Could be wrong.
I noticed it too. I’m not an avid TV watcher, but I’d guess around 5-10 years ago there was a relaxing of the profanity standards. The race to the bottom continues! 🤡
Watch old Johnny Carson episodes, they censor all kinds of things on there now. Punchlines to immigration jokes for example.
I don’t have cable but I have PlutoTv and there are no censors there. They even show titties.
But I did notice when I was watching King of New York the other day, every time they said some racist shit, they didn’t sub title it and there’s a lot of racist language in that movie.
OTA still has standards with certain exemptions. The reason you never heard it on cable was the advertisers.
Well, you see what the advertisers support these days. So no surprise they're fine with this.
Decades ago?
I hadn't watched commercials for around 4 years, until about 6 months ago. Commercial came on promoting a drug "PREP" fags can take before sodomy, that reduces risk of infection.... never again.
