It is better than slavery. The problem is no one remembers what slavery was like because it's been gone for a century and a half. Slavery was apathy and neglect, not conspiracy and hatred. Conspiracy and hatred are fantasies invented to make Black people the hero of the story and White people the villain.

Slavery isn't a story. It didn't have heroes and villains. It was mundane and soul-sucking, with a side of whips and chains. Modern people can't handle that people at the time were awful and just didn't care. You got whipped for not doing your job and the guy doing the whipping gave you one less because he needed his smoke break and the boss wasn't watching. None of it mattered.

Black people weren't special, they were expendable. It's far, far worse than a conspiracy of hatred because a conspiracy of hatred makes Black people the center of attention and being the center of attention is redeeming, even when it's costing you your life.

Or so I'm lead to believe by history books written in the antebellum period and contemporary newspaper clippings. You know, primary sources.

This is narrative shaping stuff. Stuff you never read about. Thanks.
