Sometimes things in science can be dangerous, or can be later misused, but that doesn't mean the research to understand how animal to human transmission happens in the first place is necessarily nefarious or done with the intent to weaponize, etc.
I know "gain of function" is easy to misrepresent to be some evil weaponization thing, but that's not actually what was being studied or why.
I came here to say exactly what you did except I really disagree with "not actually true". The CCP used this as a bioweapon after initial outbreak. Your context is necessary but OP's statement is very true. I never thought I'd live to see a world superpower use a bioweapon in my lifetime and here we are. I'm glad it wasn't the US doing it because we have some really end of days things incubating in our reactors but still. Maybe covid just naturally evolved and it's all a coincidence but it doesn't matter because it doesn't change how China used it as a bioweapon after the initial outbreak.

Some Americans were at least involved in funding it. Fauci for sure, off the top of my head.
