TL;DR-Standard Dem strategy is to just rally around Newsom now and make sure no other dem enters the race. But the problem with that is that if people vote in favor of the recall, then they are basically fucked.
Or they could hedge their bets and put in another dem, but that would split the dem vote two ways and also be a set up for failure.
